Now that you have InnoCaption and have the ability to make and receive calls regularly, it may be helpful to understand a little bit of the technology behind making cell phone calls.

Understanding Dropped Calls

In telecommunications a ‘dropped call’ occurs when a phone call is terminated before either party intended it to be terminated. Mobile phone network carriers measure this using an acronym called the ‘Dropped Call Rate’ or DCR. The DCR is measured as the percentage of calls which are dropped. This rate varies by carrier, with the number ranging from 1-5% of the total volume of calls. With roughly 2.4 billion cell phone calls made in the United States each day, this equates to 24-120 million dropped phone calls each day. It is no wonder then that 72% of Americans stated that they experience dropped calls occasionally and 32% claimed to encounter this problem at least a few times a week.

How this might affect your use of InnoCaption:  It means that dropped calls will happen occasionally, however, these dropped calls are not caused by InnoCaption. When a dropped call occurs, often times the mobile phone user can simply call the person back and have a successful call. The biggest variable to whether a call will be dropped or not is the strength of the network signal for the mobile phone. No matter how strong the networks are though, dropped calls will probably always be a part of the mobile phone user experience.

Understanding Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi is the wireless connection of an internet source. It allows you to receive data (or surf the web) without physically being connected to your internet source. If you are not getting an internet connection on your cell phone, you may need to connect to Wi-Fi. You can connect to Wi-Fi through your smartphone’s settings. Many restaurants,
hotels, coffee shops, and airports offer public Wi-Fi to their patrons.

However, it is important to note that not all Wi-Fi sources are created equal. The more devices that are utilizing a single Wi-Fi source, the weaker it becomes and can cause issues with stability. When using public Wi-Fi, the provider of the Wi-Fi sometimes requires an agreement before having full use of their Wi-Fi. If you haven’t accepted their agreement, you may not have full use of their Wi-Fi. The easiest way to check if you need to agree to their terms is to open your internet browser and it will pop up if there is one.

How this might affect your use of InnoCaption:  InnoCaption’s technology uses both voice and data to provide you with the fastest, easiest and most accurate captioning for your smart phone. If your phone does not support simultaneous voice and data, you will need to be connected to Wi-Fi in order to make or receive a call. Understanding Rebooting/Restarting Your Phone

Sometimes our phones, just like computers can begin to run slow or improperly. Phones are mini computers that will, after time, get out of sync. When phones begin to run slow or different than how they should, we suggest that you restart or reboot your phone. Rebooting is the process of shutting your phone completely off and then turning it back on. This will allow the technology and programs to shut down and get a fresh start. Rebooting your phone can help issues with poor signals, calling problems, messaging issues and slow data connections.

How this might affect your use of InnoCaption:  Anytime the phone is running slowly or improperly, it can cause the applications on the phone to not perform as well or even as they should. Restarting your phone also gives your applications a fresh start. This includes our
InnoCaption application.

Understanding 3G vs. 4G

3G and 4G are common terms used to describe mobile phone networks. The “G” stands for generation, meaning that 3G and 4G are simply the 3rd and 4th generation of mobile broad band internet networks. At this time, 4G networks are only used for data connections, while the older networks perform the voice connection. Each time a new generation of wireless broadband is released, the carriers must upgrade their phones so that they can send and receive signals from the new towers. As a general rule the 4G network connection should be faster than the 3G connection on the same network. It is important to note that not all 4G networks are created equal. 4G network strength and speed can vary based on location and carrier. Certain carriers are strong in certain areas, so you can check which carrier has the strongest connection in you specific area.

How this might affect your use of InnoCaption:  InnoCaption uses simultaneous voice and data to caption phone calls for the deaf or hard of hearing user. The captions come through using the data network (4G or Wi-Fi) and the voice connection comes through using the standard voice network. This is why the strong 4G network connection is necessary for the application to function properly when not connected to WiFi.
