Is InnoCaption For Me?

Are you finding it more difficult to have a conversation on your cellphone because of hearing loss?

You are not alone.  About 20% of adults in the U.S. have some degree of hearing loss –  that’s 48 million people!  Most common causes of hearing loss are noise and aging.  As you age, changes in the inner ear cause a slow but steady hearing loss. The loss may be mild or severe, but it is always permanent. However, hearing loss is affecting many more before the age of 65.

Among post-9/11 veterans, 1.5 million have come home with hearing loss and tinnitus, or ringing in the ears.  The most-widespread injury for veterans has been hearing loss and other auditory complications, according to interviews and benefits data.

In June  2013, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported that, among 5.2 million pre-adolescents and teens, 12.5 percent  (and rising)  have sustained permanent noise-induced hearing damage.    Researchers hypothesize that this can be attributed to the access to portable media players and earbuds.

With hearing loss, it’s easy to understand the difficulty in using something as simple as a cellphone. Many people who are losing their hearing has had it happen so gradual that it is difficult to pinpoint the change in their hearing until they find themselves actually no longer using the phone because it becomes too  hard or embarrassing to ask people to repeat themselves. Hearing loss can isolate people.
However, InnoCaption’s  captioning app can reconnect those with hearing loss to the people in their world!

InnoCaption is Breaking the Sound Barrier

InnoCaption’s app for smartphones provides fast and accurate instantaneous captioning for the deaf and hard of hearing who want to use their own voice to talk, but need assistance hearing the other party.   There are no more delays in conversations because captioning is that instantaneous! InnoCaption empowers the user to make or
receive any phone call whenever and wherever they choose!

To be eligible for InnoCaption, you must have a hearing loss that makes it difficult to use a cellphone.  The InnoCaption app is FREE to those who need it and is paid for pursuant to a program through the Interstate Telecommunications Relay Services (TRS) Fund.   A portion of all telephone bills is dedicated to services like this for people who have difficulty hearing.

Hearing Loss Among Our Teens

Posted by

It’s a simple statement to say that we live in a much louder world today, but with that come consequences that aren’t so simple. Hearing loss is affecting every generation, in fact, 1 in 5 Americans has hearing loss.

But did you know that 1 in 8 children and teens has permanent hearing loss due to high-volume sounds? Did you know that teen hearing loss has increased 30% in the last decade alone? According to the Journal of Pediatrics, 12.5 percent of kids between the ages of 6 and 19 suffer from loss of hearing as a result of using ear phones/buds turned to a high volume setting.

The high cost of technology. Portable music players have been around for decades, but the technology in MP3 players allows users to listen longer because music is so accessibly stored on their device and the ear buds deliver sound directly into the ear canal, eliminating other sounds.

Hearing loss can result from damage to structures and/or nerve fibers in the inner ear that respond to sound. This type of hearing loss, termed “noise-induced hearing loss,” is usually caused by exposure to excessively loud sounds and cannot be medically or surgically corrected. Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) can result from a one-time exposure to a very loud sound, blast, or impulse, or from listening to loud sounds over an extended period.

A half hour is all it takes … yet hearing loss lasts forever.  NIHL can be caused by prolonged exposure to over 85 dB; in just a half an hour of loud sounds can start to damage a person’s ears. When a teen listens to their MP3 player at 70% of its maximum volume, it is about 85dB!

What can be done?  Teach the teens in your life about hearing loss. Give them guidelines – no more than 60 percent of maximum volume for no more than an hour. Headphones are safer than ear buds. When mowing the lawn, use ear protection and when at concerts or a loud sporting event, make putting in foam ear plugs a popular trend. If you experience hearing loss, share your story with them…let them know what it is like to live with hearing loss.

My personal struggle to hear and comprehend telephone conversations puts me at GREAT disadvantage in my job. Some days I just want to give up. I rely heavily on my iPhone but [now] with InnoCaption I have the accessibility, convenience, confidence, and mobility to use a mobile voice communication device as it was intended!

I’ve tried apps on my iPhone to get captions with mediocre results, but InnoCaption is different. The captions follow the call and are accurate. Now when someone gives me an email or phone number, I don’t have to have it repeated. And I can recall the details [through a saved dialogue] after hanging up. If I give out my personal InnoCaption [provided] phone number, inbound calls are captioned when I answer the call. No extra steps needed. No more “Let me call you back”.

I have tried other captioning phones. I wanted mobile, I wanted fast, I wanted accurate. I found nothing until InnoCaption. I found that other services made me hard of reading on top of being hard of hearing. I now have what I waited for!

Cell Phone Technology

Posted by

Now that you have InnoCaption and have the ability to make and receive calls regularly, it may be helpful to understand a little bit of the technology behind making cell phone calls.

Understanding Dropped Calls

In telecommunications a ‘dropped call’ occurs when a phone call is terminated before either party intended it to be terminated. Mobile phone network carriers measure this using an acronym called the ‘Dropped Call Rate’ or DCR. The DCR is measured as the percentage of calls which are dropped. This rate varies by carrier, with the number ranging from 1-5% of the total volume of calls. With roughly 2.4 billion cell phone calls made in the United States each day, this equates to 24-120 million dropped phone calls each day. It is no wonder then that 72% of Americans stated that they experience dropped calls occasionally and 32% claimed to encounter this problem at least a few times a week.

How this might affect your use of InnoCaption:  It means that dropped calls will happen occasionally, however, these dropped calls are not caused by InnoCaption. When a dropped call occurs, often times the mobile phone user can simply call the person back and have a successful call. The biggest variable to whether a call will be dropped or not is the strength of the network signal for the mobile phone. No matter how strong the networks are though, dropped calls will probably always be a part of the mobile phone user experience.

Understanding Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi is the wireless connection of an internet source. It allows you to receive data (or surf the web) without physically being connected to your internet source. If you are not getting an internet connection on your cell phone, you may need to connect to Wi-Fi. You can connect to Wi-Fi through your smartphone’s settings. Many restaurants,
hotels, coffee shops, and airports offer public Wi-Fi to their patrons.

However, it is important to note that not all Wi-Fi sources are created equal. The more devices that are utilizing a single Wi-Fi source, the weaker it becomes and can cause issues with stability. When using public Wi-Fi, the provider of the Wi-Fi sometimes requires an agreement before having full use of their Wi-Fi. If you haven’t accepted their agreement, you may not have full use of their Wi-Fi. The easiest way to check if you need to agree to their terms is to open your internet browser and it will pop up if there is one.

How this might affect your use of InnoCaption:  InnoCaption’s technology uses both voice and data to provide you with the fastest, easiest and most accurate captioning for your smart phone. If your phone does not support simultaneous voice and data, you will need to be connected to Wi-Fi in order to make or receive a call. If the Wi-Fi is not a strong source, this can cause the calls to not connect or to be connected and then drop. To learn more about Wi-FI, click here.
