How does your call captioning technology work?

We provide users with the choice of captioning by either a live stenographer or best-in-class automated speech recognition technology. InnoCaption Users are able to choose between the two caption modes at the start of a call or they can choose to switch mid-call with the simple press of a button. To read more about our captioning technology click here.

Are my calls private?

Your call transcripts are kept strictly private and confidential. Call transcripts are not saved or archived on InnoCaption servers and our team does not have the ability to access transcripts that are saved on a user’s device. Our privacy and compliance procedures are regulated and audited by the FCC.

Our stenographers are highly trained, professional captioners that go through strict compliance measures to protect your privacy and all transcripts are deleted from captioner devices. Our captioners are only able to listen to and transcribe one side of the conversation and do not hear what is said by the InnoCaption user. The only exception to this is during conference calls when the captioner can hear all parties on the line.

For users that choose to have our ASR engine caption their calls, no call audio is logged for machine learning or any other purpose.

Can I continue to use my regular phone number instead of my InnoCaption Number?

All InnoCaption users are assigned a personal InnoCaption phone number upon registration. Any calls made to or from this number are captioned by the InnoCaption app. You are free to give this new number out to your contacts for captioned calls.

If you would like to continue using just your existing cell phone number instead, you can do so by using InnoCaption’s automatic call forwarding and caller ID functions. When used together, you can effectively continue to use your regular phone number. Automatic call forwarding enables you to redirect all calls sent to your regular phone number to your InnoCaption number, allowing people to continue calling your regular phone number. Caller ID allows your existing cell phone number to be displayed on the recipient’s phone screen when you call them on the InnoCaption app - so they will know you are calling them.

Can InnoCaption be used for captioning Zoom and other video conference meetings?

Video conferencing apps are now being used at an increased volume. Work meetings, family gatherings and doctor visits are all being held virtually and the need for accessible communication solutions for the deaf and hard of hearing has skyrocketed. InnoCaption Web helps make video conference calls far more accessible through a web browser-based live call captioning service. After you have downloaded the InnoCaption app on your mobile phone and registered for an account, press the LOGIN button at the top right of this website to get started with captioned calls.

It is important to note that the video conference call you are joining must have a telephone dial-in number in order to be used in conjunction with InnoCaption Web. If your Zoom meeting invitation does not have a telephone dial-in access number, your meeting host will have to set one up.

You can use InnoCaption for any phone call a hearing person would also make, including dialing into video conference meetings. However, organizations such as employers, schools or government offices that are required to provide accessibility accommodations cannot use InnoCaption as a substitute for CART captioning. The choice to use InnoCaption for calls or meetings belongs to the individual who is registered for the service and cannot be mandated by an employer or other organization.

Are there any costs for me to use the InnoCaption app?

InnoCaption is free of charge to the deaf and hard of hearing community in the United States, with no limits to how much you can use our service. We are funded and administered by the FCC to provide free captioning services for the deaf and hard of hearing who wish to use their voices to call but require assistance to hear.

Please note that you do need to have your own smartphone device or tablet in order to download and use our app. This device must also have a cellular or Wi-Fi internet connection.

Do you offer a landline phone captioning solution?

InnoCaption does not provide landline captioned phones. However, our mobile app allows you to view captions on your cell phone while sending the call audio to your existing landline phone for outbound calls. This feature is great for individuals who are hard of hearing that may want to use a landline telephone or conference speakerphone for longer calls, group calls or for better audio quality.

For instructions on how to use this feature, please visit our Help Center article here.

What devices (phones and tablets) does the InnoCaption app work on?

The InnoCaption app is supported across a wide variety of devices, including phones and tablets on both Apple iOS and Google Android platforms. For iPhones, the InnoCaption app works on the iPhone XS and newer devices with iOS 13.0 or higher. Older devices are no longer compatible with the latest Apple operating systems. For Android devices, the InnoCaption app works on devices with OS 8.0 or higher. While the InnoCaption app has been tested across devices from most major manufacturers, we would like to note that we have had some technical issues with Motorola phones.

When you are considering purchasing a new phone, if you are not looking at the latest model, please keep in mind that manufacturers phase out support for older devices. While a phone's operating system may be compatible with the InnoCaption app right now, once a manufacturer discontinues support for your device, you will no longer be able to update the app to its latest version. As such, we generally encourage our users to purchase phones that will not run the risk of becoming incompatible in the near future.

I don’t have a hearing loss myself but want to test the app for someone else, what can I do?

If you are not deaf or hard of hearing but would like to test the InnoCaption app on behalf of someone else, we can set up a demo account for you. Demo accounts can be set up for friends and family members, healthcare professionals, employer representatives, social workers, or educators who may be considering recommending the InnoCaption app. To sign up for a demo account, simply download the app and indicate that you would like to request a demo at the beginning of the registration process.

Please note that our regulatory team reviews all demo account requests to prevent fraudulent accounts.

What is the difference between a closed caption phone and the InnoCaption app?

A captioned telephone is a landline telephone with a built-in screen which shows captions of what the other person on the call says. The captions for many landline captioned phones are provided by a human operator using speech recognition technology. The operator listens to the conversation and re-voices what is being said into a speech recognition system which processes and sends captions to the hard of hearing user. Some landline phones are now incorporating automatic speech recognition (ASR) captions without the human component. You can check your landline caption phone providers website to find the kind of technology they are using.

The InnoCaption app is a mobile application which is like having a captioned phone within your smartphone, tablet, or computer. InnoCaption is the ONLY captioned phone provider who uses CART (aka stenographers) or best in class automatic speech recognition (ASR) for captions. The InnoCaption user is in control of whether they have their call captioned by CART or ASR – they can even switch between the two in real time as their accessibility needs change.

What is Real Time Text (RTT)? What is the difference between RTT and InnoCaption?

Real Time Text is an accessibility feature which you can enable on many smartphones which lets you send text instantly as it is typed to communicate via a phone call. The technology is meant to replace legacy Text Telephone (TTY) technology – but it also works with TTY and does not require any additional accessories. RTT calls can generally include an audio stream which can be muted or left on. With RTT the text you enter appears instantaneously, unlike with text messaging. For example, if you type something and delete it, the other person can see what you are typing and deleting in real time.

The InnoCaption app is a different technology which provides instant captions of what the other party to a phone call is saying.
