AI Refine: Faster, More Natural Conversations with Less Typing

Many D/deaf and hard of hearing individuals, as well as people with speech disabilities, already use InnoCaption’s advanced Text-to-Speech (TTS) features to make calls with confidence. Today, we’re helping make those conversations even smoother.

Introducing AI Refine, a new feature that lets you turn a few words into complete, polished sentences with a tap.

Why We Built It

Typing full sentences during live phone calls can be difficult, especially when the conversation is moving quickly. You want to stay engaged, yet pausing to decide how to phrase something—and then typing out every word—can interrupt the flow. For many Deaf individuals whose primary language is ASL, the added step of translating ideas into written English can make that process even more demanding.

By harnessing the latest developments in AI technology, our team was able to create a feature that lightens that effort and helps each call feel more natural. Instead of typing full sentences, you can enter a short or partial thought, tap the AI Refine button, and instantly receive a clear, conversational response that fits smoothly into your call. Communicating through TTS has never felt easier or more intuitive.

How It Works: Simple and Intuitive

AI Refine is designed to feel easy, natural, and fully under your control.

  1. Type a few words. Start with the essential words that express the main idea of what you want to say.
  2. Tap the AI Refine button. The feature uses conversational context to shape your message.
  3. Get a conversational response. Your phrase becomes a complete sentence that’s ready to be spoken aloud.

How AI Refine Enhances Your Calls

AI Refine makes it simple to generate natural responses with less effort. Here’s an example of how it can support you during a call.

Imagine you are calling your doctor’s office to clarify a test result.

  • You type: "got results, confused next steps"
    → AI Refine: “I received my test results, but I’m not sure what the next steps are. Could you explain them to me?”
  • You type: "earlier appointment"
    → AI Refine: “Is there any chance of scheduling an earlier appointment?”
  • You type: "email summary after call"
    → AI Refine: “Would it be possible for you to email me a summary after our call?”
  • You type: "confirm insurance covers"
    → AI Refine: “I’d like to confirm whether my insurance covers this service.”

Note: Because this feature takes conversational context into account, exact responses may vary.

Using AI Refine During a Call

AI Refine is now available in the InnoCaption app. To use the feature:

  1. Open the InnoCaption app.
  2. Make sure Text-to-Speech is enabled:
    • Tap Settings
    • Tap Text-to-Speech
    • Tap the Text-to-Speech toggle ON (it will turn green)
  3. Return to the keypad and make a call.
  4. While using Text-to-Speech, type a short response in the text box.
  5. Tap the AI Refine button (above the blue send arrow).
  6. Tap the Send button (blue arrow) to send the refined response.

To get comfortable with AI Refine before a live call, go to Settings and tap Make a Test Call. You can speak with one of our AI voice agents and try AI Refine in a low-pressure setting. It’s a great way to explore how natural and intuitive your responses can sound.
